About Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga literally means ‘ eight limbs’. This refers to the eight limbs of yoga as written in the yoga sutras. Ashtanga Yoga is taught in sequence, where one ‘asana’
(posture/exercise) is linked to the next with breath and movement called a ‘vinyassa’. It has the potential to build vibrantly healthy body and mind. By gaining proficiency in posture, using correct breathing technique and a point of gaze ‘ drishti’ we have the power to gain control of the senses and deep self awareness.

Ashtanga works with energy locks of our core muscles to give it its extreme strengthening benefits. This creates an internal heat which purifies muscles and organs, expelling unwanted toxins as well as releasing beneficial hormones and minerals, which nourish the body.

It is said that where there is no effort there is no benefit. Strength, stamina and sweat are unique aspects of this traditional yoga, seemingly contrary to Western perceptions of yoga.
